For my most recent project, I created a children’s book focused on exploring the topic of mental health.
Instead of illustrating a non fiction informative style book, research highlighted how often a narrative often provides a starting point for children and carers to open up a dialogue about important issues, such as struggling.
Instead of focusing solely on one mental health issue, for example anxiety or depression. I decided to focus the story on the idea of struggling in general, which every adult and child will experience in their life time.
When the Rain Starts, follows the adventure of a little tortoise trying to escape the rain. Only when he accepts the help of his friends does the tortoise realize he doesn’t have to struggle on his own.
When the Rain Starts is currently unpublished but will be entered into the Macmillan Prize 2020.
